Event Safety Tips

We want you to be as safe as possible when attending events on campus.  Check out these tips to make sure you're educated on safety at DePaul before attending your next on-campus event.

FEST VINNY VANS UPDATE

On Friday, May 26, Vinny Vans will run 8pm-2am with pickup in the Student Center Parking Lot (Lot H).  Please note, based on usage, the last pickup may be at 1 or 1:30am.

Things to remember:

  • Watch out for your neighbors – if someone around you looks like they need help, check in with them. If someone is getting unruly, alert Public Safety by notifying a uniformed officer, calling 773-325-7777 or use a blue emergency call tower.
  • Keep yourself and your belongings safe – be aware of your surroundings and keep an eye on your personal items at all times.
  • Be considerate – this is a shared space and we want everyone to enjoy themselves. Keep the vibes chill and your hands to yourself.
  • Have emergency contact info on your person and your phone lock screen in case emergency personnel need to know.
  • When heading home, travel in groups through well-lit and high traffic areas.

DPU Alert can notify the DePaul University community via text, voice call, and e-mail. DePaul will send DPU Alerts only in emergencies, including university closure due to severe winter weather. Be sure to verify your contact information for DPU Alert in Campus Connect.

When you arrive to an event, make sure you make note of exit locations in the event of an emergency. If you hear gunfire, shouting, screams or commotion, react immediately.

Call 9-1-1 FIRST in an active-shooter situation. Then call Public Safety at the Lincoln Park Campus (773-325-7777) or the Loop Campus (312-362-8400).Run: Escape from the threat if you have a clear path of escape. Know the location of all exits.   • Lock the room/office, stay quiet, turn lights off, hide under a desk or in a closet, and set cell phone on silent, not just vibrate

Fight: As a last resort, attempt to incapacitate the shooter, improvise weapons or throw items.

  • Attack as a team if possible, from multiple angles; and
  • Use items such as chairs, fire extinguishers, coffee mugs, etc.

At the Lincoln Park campus, use the safety escort service to travel between buildings and parking lots/garages, available from 6pm - 6am, 7 days a week by calling 773-325-SAFE (7233)

To travel between Lincoln Park and Loop campuses, use the inter-campus shuttle, available from 4pm - 10pm, Monday through Thursday.

To travel to residential destinations just outside the boundaries of Lincoln Park, use the Vinnie Van service.

Be Aware of Campus Call Box Locations

A number of well-marked exterior call boxes are located throughout the Lincoln Park campus. These emergency call boxes can be used to report a crime, a fire, or any type of emergency.
