Expansion Policy

To better protect individual chapter members, chapters, and DePaul University, the following are required before any chapter may become a recognized fraternity or sorority at DePaul.

As of the 2025-2026 academic year, DePaul is currently not accepting any requests for new Chapter expansions on campus. If you would like to meet with somebody from our FSL team to discuss future potential expansion opportunities, please contact us at fsl@depaul.edu

  • Group Requirements

    Please note: DePaul University is no longer accepting for expansion "City Wide" chapters of fraternities and sororities. At this time, DePaul will continue to recognize such chapters that were previously recognized by DePaul subject to the same policies applicable to all recognized fraternities and sororities. However, DePaul expects that these groups will actively work with the University to become chartered as a DePaul-specific Chapter by July 1, 2017. At that time, DePaul reserves the right to no longer recognize even those city-wide chapters that are already recognized.

    Any group that identifies itself with Greek letters and whose primary mission is social, not academic, that wishes to become a recognized DePaul University chapter (a “Group”) must first contact DePaul University’s Fraternity and Sorority Life Staff. Every Group will be required to provide the Fraternity and Sorority Life Staff with the following:

    A. General Information:

    1. A statement from the Group, no longer than 2 typed pages, explaining how the organization relates to Vincentian values and the DePaul University mission (this information can be found at the DePaul University Office of Mission and Ministry website).
    2. Proof of Insurance - At the time of registration and on an annual basis thereafter, Groups must provide proof that the Group and/or the Group’s Organization carries an insurance policy in the amounts of at least $1 million general liability and $2 million aggregate, as well as a certificate of insurance listing DePaul University as an additional insured on that policy.

    B. Group Information (all Groups interested in becoming a registered fraternity or sorority at DePaul must be independently incorporated within the United States and a not-for-profit organization (a “Organization”):

    1. A description or diagram of the Organization’s governance structure;
    2. Contact information for the Group’s liaison at the Organization;
    3. History of the Organization;

    8. Samples of literature and publications of the Organization (if applicable);
    9. Information documenting the requirements for membership in the Organization; and
    10. Copies of the Organization’s education process (this may include new member education and/or intake), including goals and objectives, length of program and supervisor of program.

    C. Alumni/ae Information (if applicable):

    1. Information regarding Group members (or former members) interested in establishing a DePaul chapter of the Group, including total number of area alumni, number interested in assisting an establishing chapter, number of undergraduate, number of graduate, or faculty/staff members of DePaul University.
  • FSL Council Requirement

    All recognized DePaul University fraternities and sororities must be part of one the four following councils at DePaul University:

    • Interfraternity Council (IFC)
    • Multicultural Greek Council (MGC)
    • National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC)
    • Panhellenic Council (PHC)

    Please Note: Groups may only approach the councils regarding expansion once the materials mentioned above have been submitted and approval has been granted by DePaul’s Fraternity and Sorority Life Staff. Attached to this expansion policy is a recommended list of items to include with the expansion application for the council.

  • DePaul University Policies and Procedures

    All Groups interested in seeking expansion at DePaul must agree to abide by all applicable DePaul University policies and procedures. This includes the DePaul Code of Student Responsibility, Student Organization Directives, and DePaul University Fraternity and Sorority Directives. The policies can be access by these links:

  • Expansion Process

    The expansion process is jointly managed by the University and the Councils. Interested Groups may contact DePaul’s Fraternity and Sorority Life Staff via email at fsl@depaul.edu to receive assistance throughout the expansion process. Materials that may be provided include:

    • Statistics of the following:
      • University enrollment
      • Fraternity and Sorority membership
      • Scholarship
      • Numbers from intake/recruitment for the last two academic years (if available)
    • Samples of Fraternity and Sorority-related publications
    • Copies of the Constitutions of the desired Council of membership
    • General assistance in deciphering which council, (National Pan-Hellenic Council NPHC, Multicultural Greek Council-MGC, Panhellenic Council-PHC, or Interfraternity Council-IFC) the Group should seek membership in and information regarding the Councils’ national policies, as necessary.
      • Exceptions to any of the expectations listed above will only be made in extreme circumstances and at the sole discretion of the Office of Student Involvement and/or Fraternity and Sorority Life Staff.

    Please Note: DePaul seeks to form reciprocal partnerships with groups seeking recognition at DePaul. A key component of such a partnership is that the Group shows support of university policies and procedures. Underground chapters are detrimental to students in the chapter and other DePaul students. Groups seeking to expand should be aware that if the Group chooses to organize and function on campus without adhering to university procedures, Groups will not be considered for expansion for at least five academic years. For any questions regarding this policy, please contact DePaul University’s Office of Student Involvement at fsl@depaul.edu.
