This is my first time registering to vote. What do I do?
You can Register To Vote Online in less than 20 minutes. Typically, you only need the last four digits of your Social Security Number and a valid ID from the state you intend to vote in, although that may vary from state to state. Additionally, if you have any questions, feel free to Contact Us at Vote DePaul directly!
I'm not sure if I'm registered to vote. What do I do?
If you think you may be registered to vote in Illinois you can check directly with their Illinois Voter Registration Lookup. If you believe you may be registered elsewhere, you can Check Your Registration Status with Vote.org! Remember, though, you can only be registered to vote and can only vote in one state--either your home state (if applicable), or the state your college or university is in (Illinois). If you are not sure if you are registered to vote in your home state, you will have to check with your state's State Board of Elections.

If you need a computer, visit the Office of Student Involvement during their normal business hours. Let the staff know you'd like to register to vote, and they'll direct you to an available computer. You can also register in person at several locations across the city or via mail. You will need two forms of identification with your current address. Learn more here.
To register to vote in your home state, you will have to refer to the local rules, laws and procedures for registering to vote in that state, and when you vote, you will do so using an absentee ballot, so be sure to request your ballot with enough time to receive it and send it back prior to the election closing.
Where do I vote on Election Day?
The Illinois online voter website has an Illinois Polling Place Lookup tool. If you are from out of state, vote.org has a Polling Place Locator for each state.
Can I vote in my state’s elections even if I am out of state?
Absolutely! If you are registered to vote in a state other than Illinois, you can request an absentee ballot from your home state to fill out and mail back to still have your vote counted. While the specifics of who qualifies for an absentee ballot varies from state to state, all out-of-state college students qualify to request and receive a ballot from their home state.
What is a mail-in ballot?
Voting by mail is another way you can cast your vote without having to fill out a ballot in person on election day. A few states (California, Colorado, D.C., Hawaii, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Vermont, and Washington) automatically send their registered voters mail-in ballots. If you register to vote in one of these states, make sure to send your mail-in ballot to your current student address, not your permanent residential address in your home state.
What if I can’t vote on election day?
Most states allow for early/grace period voting. You can check the specific rules and guidelines for voting in your state here. Another option is to request a mail-in ballot from your state which you can do here. If you live in Illinois, there is a list of Early Voting Locations.
What will be on my ballot in this upcoming election?
Several nonpartisan resources provide sample ballots to view before election day. BallotReady has a ballot research tool that provides information about all the candidates and measures on your ballot! Just plug in your address and view every name and measure on your ballot. Ballotpedia also has a sample ballot lookup tool as well as information about every election occurring in 2024.
