Dr. John Harney, author of Dreams of a Young Republic: The American Vincentians in China, will hold a special session for students to discuss the role of archival materials in the research process and in final publication. Materials in Special Collections and Archives inspired his research.
Light refreshments will be provided.
Dr. Harney is an Associate Professor of History at Centre College in Danville, Kentucky. He was a Visiting Assistant Professor of History at DePaul University from 2011-2013.
Dr. Harney's interests include identity formation and colonial and post-colonial relations in East Asia, the history of popular participation in sports in the modern era, Catholicism and Catholic communities in 20th-century China, representations of history in video games, and the wider uses and interpretations of history in popular culture. His previous book, Empire of Infields: Baseball in Taiwan and Cultural Identity, 1895-1968, was published in 2019.
Support for this lecture is provided by the Vincentian Archives Fund. The Vincentian Studies Institute provided support for Dr. Harney's research.
