The Great Gauss-Bonnet Theorem with Dr. Sher
|
Consider a surface in three-dimensional space. Think of the surface of the earth, or of a donut. You will observe that one has a hole, and one does not; this reflects the fact that the surfaces have different topology. These surfaces can also be analyzed by studying their curvature, which measures how curved they are at each point; this is differential geometry. The Gauss-Bonnet theorem provides a fascinating connection between the geometry and the topology of such surfaces. I will introduce the basics, with the goal of explaining what this surprising theorem says.
