CNTR’D is a signature event with a home in the Reading Room of the Center for Black Diaspora at DePaul University. The quarterly event centers artistry, innovation, and a revelatory imagination that contributes to the transformative power of culture in Black Studies. Grasping at the Roots is a “love letter to dedicated to the Black Climate Movement.” We invite an audience to experience an intimate evening to view a new short-film with filmmakers, Leah Derray and Keenan Lacy-Rhodes.

Invisible Giants: Filmmaking & The Art of Historical Preservation with Essence McDowell, author and filmmaker and Tom Callahan, video journalist and filmmaker

Join us for an exciting dive into the world of filmmaking with the creators of the short documentary Invisible Giants! This powerful film shines a light on the untold stories of Black women in Chicago, revealing the importance of preserving and celebrating often-overlooked histories. You'll get a behind-the-scenes look at how an inspiring text was transformed into a captivating short film. Watch clips from the documentary and hear directly from Essence McDowell, author and filmmaker, and Tom Callahan, video journalist and filmmaker, as they share their creative journey and what it takes to bring stories like these to life.
