Mission
14 East is a collaborative of DePaul students cultivating an interest in a wide array of subjects from politics to literature to culture. From this magazine, readers can find unique perspectives on issues pertinent to young adults in Chicago. We aim to humanize the issues that are attracting attention in the social atmosphere.

The free exchange of ideas is crucial to the mission of any university tasked with education. The free and independent press, it follows, are a necessity for our school, and having more than one outlet certainly couldn't hurt. However, 14 East is not simply a soap box from which the loudest voices may prevail: our magazine has made a concerted effort in its first few months of active publication to shine a light on stories that would otherwise go untold, giving a voice and platform to those who cannot speak for themselves. When it comes to planning the future for the magazine -- our next lineup, month or year -- there is only one question we need ask ourselves: what must be done? With that mindset as our guide, our goal of humanizing our subjects is not met when we put their picture on our website; only when we've captured their actual dignity can we say that we've done our job. Someone once said that a journalist's job is to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable. The staff at 14 East aims to do exactly that.

Accessible Futures DePaul works to serve and bring attention to the disabled population on campus. Accessible Futures DePaul is by disabled students for disabled students and bridges the gap between disability and campus life. The purpose of the ANKLE organization is to develop student knowledge regarding the various professions in podiatric medicine. It is designed to encourage students with the hopes of becoming of doctor of podiatric medicine and illustrate the admission process through seminars, guest speakers, workshops, and community service opportunities. All of these opportunities will effectively prepare students to enter into the podiatry school application process with substantial background knowledge of the field and opportunities available. This club will also work to improve students with the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and commitment necessary to enter medicine as a doctor of podiatry, to one day care for the healthcare needs of their patients.

The DePaul Alive Inside club draws on student interests in neuroscience, music, and service to grow meaningful community engagement with Chicago's aged population with a particular focus on brain health. Persons over the age of 65 represent the world's fastest growing population, and as societies become older, the need for effective and meaningful strategies to improve and maintain cognitive health increases. Significant evidence supports the use of music to restore brain functions, including the memory loss observed in dementia patients, especially those with Alzheimer's disease. Our club aims to raise awareness for the therapeutic value of music and the aging brain by bringing the health and wellness of music directly into Chicago-area nursing homes. Students will find a unique opportunity to explore means of using music as therapy and its healing power when prescription medicines fall short. This outreach will provide student members with the opportunity to learn and appreciate the neuroscience of health and disease, the joy and power of music, and the value of multidisciplinary approaches to problem solving.

The mission of Blue Demon Theatre is to inspire all DePaul students to be active theatre makers in the Chicago area.

Taken from DePaul Mission "Core Values" Access to Higher Education: We believe everyone has something to contribute to theatre, even if they have not been a part of theatre before. Every member has a unique artistic and musical background that they bring to the table. By offering roles that support first time performers, directors, writers, and technical members, we break down barriers to access theatre broadly. We also break barriers within DePaul, as performance opportunities at the School of Music and The Theatre School only include students within those schools, and even students within those schools are facing reduced opportunities due to budget cuts, and are not able pursue Musical Theatre. This highly relevant field of theatre falls in between both of these schools, and is therefore covered by neither. We see two gaps: non-Major access to theatre, and all student access to Musical Theatre. We truly believe we are filling these gaps in DePaul's academic offering for our members as we provide all students at DePaul with access to high-quality, pre-professional theatre. Community and Collaboration: Theatre is interdisciplinary. With countless specialties in fields of performance, direction, tech, and production, we are challenged not only to be good in our own specialty, but to make our unique skills fit into a team of people who all think and create differently. Our one common responsibility is to be an effective communicator of our field to make it accessible to our teammates. We also foster community by sharing stories and bringing the broader community together through shared passion and fan-favorite shows that highlight the identities and experiences of others.

- Our club's purpose is to introduce new and experienced rock climbers to the Chicago and Midwest climbing community. DePaul University is deeply rooted in education, experience in the real world, and community engagement, and we feel that our organization accomplishes all three. As climbers, we strive to support one another (literally and metaphorically) both on the wall and on the ground. We take pride in the fact that even a seasoned climber can learn from someone that is new to the sport, as new climbing techniques and moves are being discovered every day. The Community Peacemakers Initiative (CPM) is a partnership between the Chicago Public Schools and DePaul University. CPM matches Peacemakers with high school teachers and their students. In the classroom, Peacemakers, in collaboration with their teacher, will facilitate a series of activities that explores the roots and systemic causes of violence, peace, and how the students can enact change. The activities culminate into a final Peace Project, where the students choose to use what they learned during the year to promote peace in their communities. A unit of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, The Department of Writing, Rhetoric, and Discourse (WRD) is concerned with the nature of written communication. The development and expression of ideas in writing constitutes the very foundation of the liberal arts, and more broadly, contemporary democratic culture. In government, education, and all manner of professions, it is through writing that we determine our values, define norms of appropriate behavior, and pursue our goals.

Our lives are increasingly mediated by digital technologies that use writing to organize sound and image in interactive spaces like the World Wide Web, and through text messaging and email, individual identity and interpersonal relationships are progressively bound up with writing. At the same time, we face growing demands for communicating across national, cultural, and linguistic borders, requiring us to rethink many assumptions we may have about written communication and expression. The Department of Writing, Rhetoric, & Discourse engages various writing practices and genres to prepare students to excel in the range of contexts in which they will go on to write.

WRD is home to three undergraduate programs: DePaul's First-Year Writing program the Minor in Professional Writing; and the Major in Writing and Rhetoric. At the graduate level, the Master of Arts in WRD addresses writing in professional and technical contexts, the preparation of postsecondary teacher-scholars in writing, and the study of language for writers. WRD also offers two Combined BA/MA programs, which link the Writing and Rhetoric BA with either graduate program and allows undergraduates to begin taking graduate courses in their senior year.

The act of writing in general and each student's writing, in particular, are of central concern in all WRD courses. Theories of language, rhetoric (how to make effective choices as writers), and discourse (the way writing structures human activity) develop students' understanding of how the individual act of writing is bound up in broader contexts of institution and ├óÔé¼ÔÇ╣culture

We are seeking dedicated athletes who are ready to commit their time and training towards our 10-month program. Prep for this kick off starts during the summer with summer intensive and summer camp.

Mock trial's mission is to give students early experience in legal procedures, and a comprehensive, first-hand look at what law looks like in practice. Even if students aren't interested in law specifically, skills and experiences acquired can be important for history, sociology, anthropology, political science, or other subjects that intersect with the law. Mock Trial will teach students invaluable skills that are directly applicable to their academic and personal pursuits. Students who participate gain analytical skills from analyzing cases and facts; as well as how to compose effective arguments and respond to questions or disputes. The mission of Net Impact at DePaul is to give both graduate and undergraduate students the platform to learn, engage and collaborate on projects which can have the potential to create positive economic, environmental, social change in their community.

DePaul Net Impact is a chapter of the international non-profit organization Net Impact. It is the mission of DePaul Net Impact to provide DePaul University students a platform to engage with and become part of a network of leaders in social and environmental impact for sustainable development. The DePaul Organization for Intersectional Health is an organization focused on addressing current issues of equity and justice within health, medicine, and wellness. In addition, we will discuss the role that medicine and science has to play in combating current health inequities and disparities. It is the mission of the DePaul Powerlifting Club to provide an accessible avenue for students to participate in powerlifting. Through education and competition, we hope to establish a community at DePaul providing the tools and support to our members for them to reach their fitness goals.

The DePaul Powerlifting Club is a recognized university club by USA Powerlifting which allows any student to represent the school during any powerlifting meet.

Members of the DePaul Powerlifting Club will be able to have their registration fees covered by the club while representing DePaul during sanctioned powerlifting competitions.

Active members can receive financial support through reimbursements for travel and other competition-related expenses while competing through the DePaul Powerlifting Club.

Membership will also allow athletes to qualify and be nominated on DePaul’s roster to compete at the annual USA Powerlifting Collegiate National Championships.

The DePaul Powerlifting clubs has equipment at the Ray Meyer Fitness center such as power bars that are reserved for club members.

The DePaul Powerlifting Club will host workshops and other educational programming that is available to members. Our programing will also include field trips to local powerlifting gyms in Chicago for group-wide training sessions.

We are DePaul PRSSA, the only public relations (PR) pre-professional group on campus, but we’re open to all communications, marketing, journalism, and advertising majors. PRSSA is helpful at any point in your college career whether you’re a freshman or senior. We host meetings and events throughout the quarter where we bring in professionals from the many disciplines of PR from non-profit to big agencies. We also host social events and agency tours where we take students directly into some of the most sought-after employers. Additionally, we have hosted PRSSA’s Midwest District Conference for more than 10 years, bringing in students from all over the country to DePaul. Overall, we are the organization for any PR major because we regularly provide educational panels, hold workshops on resumes and job applications, and also provide opportunities to network with professionals and PR peers. We do this all through socially responsible leadership and follow the Vincentian values of our institution.

DePaul PRSSA supports the development of students through avenues such as networking and professional relations through academics, and community engagement. PRSSA specifically prepares students within, but not limited to, the communication field to be successful. PRSSA upholds the ethic of the Vincentian mission's commitment to personalism and professionalism, to compassionately uphold the dignity of all members of its diverse, multi-faith, and inclusive community. For an example of how we put the mission into practice, we know that DePaul's commitment to inclusion and the development of all students means that student retention is very important. DePaul PRSSA helps with that effort. DePaul's award-winning framework, “The 4 P’s of Student Retention”, includes the pillar of “Promise” – that “all students' experiences in and out of the classroom fulfill the promise of a DePaul education.” DePaul PRSSA has helped contribute to the fulfillment of that promise with our dues-erships, alumni involvement, internship facilitating and networking/relationship building with local professionals. This includes many of the events that have been hosted on campus from May of 2023 to April of 2024. On February 22nd and 23rd, DePaul PRSSA hosted the Midwest District Conference, PRess Play. The conference utilized the spaces at the DePaul Loop Campus, which allowed 125+ students from 20 universities across the country to interact with the DePaul public relations and advertising (PRAD) program (plus 22 agencies or corporations participating in our programming – overall more than 130 professionals were involved). This raises awareness of DePaul University's graduate programs among students from other universities and heightens the reputation of DePaul's PRAD program among industry professionals. We routinely receive positive feedback on our programming and members' professionalism from participating professionals. After this year's conference, we heard anecdotally about several students applying to our College's award-winning PRAD masters program.

- Our club's purpose is to introduce new and experienced rock climbers to the Chicago and Midwest climbing community. As climbers, we strive to support one another (literally and metaphorically) both on the wall and on the ground.
