Current Affairs Corner
Trump Says Government Shutdown Likely as No Last-Minute Deal Emerges
The federal government is on track to shut down at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday, with no agreement between Republicans and Democrats. President Trump said a shutdown is “probably likely” and threatened to use it to push through irreversible cuts at Democrats’ expense. The impasse centers on Democrats’ demand to restore hundreds of billions in healthcare funding, including enhanced ACA subsidies set to expire, while Republicans push a seven-week funding extension without those provisions. Senate Democrats blocked the GOP bill, and Trump’s late-night deepfake tweets fueled doubts about his seriousness. A shutdown could furlough about 750,000 federal employees, with mass firings possible as the administration signals plans to downsize the workforce. Critical services like Social Security and mail would continue, but contractors may not receive back pay. Democrats blame Republicans for prioritizing cuts over healthcare, while Republicans argue Democrats are holding government funding hostage. Senate votes were planned Tuesday, but prospects of a deal remain slim.

Trump Tells Generals the Military Will Be Used to Fight ‘Enemy Within’
At a gathering of senior military leaders in Quantico, President Trump said U.S. troops and the National Guard should be used to quell unrest in American cities, calling places like Chicago, San Francisco, New York, and Los Angeles unsafe and suitable as “training grounds.” He framed domestic unrest, illegal immigration, and drug trafficking as part of a “war from within,” vowing to expand military deployments. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who rebranded himself as “secretary of war,” reinforced stricter combat standards and promised rank cuts, drawing muted responses from officers wary of politicization. Trump also highlighted his policy of airstrikes on suspected traffickers and recent Guard deployments to Portland, D.C., and other cities, despite legal challenges and state opposition. Critics, including Sen. Jack Reed, condemned the idea of treating U.S. communities as war zones, warning it undermines democratic norms. The event came as the Pentagon drafts a new National Defense Strategy, balancing Trump’s domestic security priorities with global challenges from China, Russia, and resource constraints amid rising defense costs.
