Current Affairs Corner
Illinois Sues to Block Trump’s National Guard Deployment
Illinois and the city of Chicago sued to stop President Trump from federalizing and deploying National Guard troops to Chicago, arguing the move reflects long-standing political hostility rather than a genuine emergency. They citedTrump’s past posts, including a 2013 call to put “troops on the streets of Chicago” and a recent “Chipocalypse Now” meme. The suit follows Trump’s weekend order to take command of 300 Illinois Guardsmen and 400 from Texas “where needed,” moves mirrored in Oregon, where U.S. District Judge Karin Immergut temporarily blocked any federally controlled Guard deployments to the state after the administration tried to reroute troops from California. Gov. JB Pritzker said “there is no insurrection here,” urged Texas to keep its Guard out of Illinois, and backed Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson’s order barring city property from aiding federal immigration operations. The White House says the president is lawfully protecting federal assets and is appealing the Oregon ruling; a hearing on Illinois’s request for a temporary restraining order is set for Thursday. The clash unfolds against mixed court rulings over Trump’s prior federalization of Guard units in California (deference upheld, but Posse Comitatus concerns flagged) and amid other deployments in D.C. and Memphis, with Trump saying he’d consider invoking the Insurrection Act if courts or local leaders blocked action while people were being killed.
U.S. Lost 32,000 Jobs in September
The U.S. private sector lost 32,000 jobs in September, according to payroll processor ADP, marking a sharp decline from August’s revised 3,000-job loss and far below economists’ expectations of a 45,000-job gain. The report highlights a weakening labor market, with leisure and hospitality shedding 19,000 positions while education and health services gained 33,000. Small businesses were hit hardest, cutting 40,000 jobs, while large firms with 500 or more employees added 33,000. Economists are paying closer attention to ADP’s numbers this month since the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ official jobs report could be delayed by the government shutdown. The disappointing figures come as the Federal Reserve has already cut interest rates and signaled further reductions, warning that hiring momentum remains fragile.
